The Pale King and the Creation of Hallownest

The Pale King was once a wyrm — a serpentine higher being — who shed that form to become a god of light and reason. He chose the Crossroads as the site of his kingdom, Hallownest, and granted the bugs there sentience using his light. In return they worshipped him, building a civilization of unprecedented sophistication in an underground world that would otherwise have been ruled by instinct and darkness.

The Infection and Its Origins

Before the Pale King, Hallownest was touched by the Radiance — a being of light and dream who held the ancient bugs in a hivemind of shared consciousness. The Pale King's new order of individualism and reason severed this connection, and the Radiance was forgotten. But she never truly vanished. Her rage at being abandoned festered as a golden infection — a plague of consuming dreams that spread through the kingdom, turning bugs mindless and hostile.

The Hollow Knight Vessel

To contain the Infection, the Pale King conceived a solution: create a being of pure void with no mind of its own — something that could act as a vessel to absorb and contain the Radiance's essence. He bred countless vessels in the Abyss, discarding any that showed emotion or will. The one he chose became the Hollow Knight, sealed in the Black Egg Temple at the heart of Hallownest.

The tragedy is that the Hollow Knight was never truly void. It had feelings — feelings it suppressed to serve its purpose. That inner conflict weakened the seal, allowing the Infection to slowly leak back out.

The Knight's Identity

You, the player character, are also a vessel — one that was cast aside into the Abyss as insufficient. You survived, and now return to a dying kingdom. Your goal, whether it's to repeat the Hollow Knight's sacrifice or to find a different ending, defines which of the game's conclusions you reach.

What Happened to the Pale King?

The Pale King's fate is never directly shown. His White Palace — a dream realm — can be accessed via the Dream Nail, and it's clear he poured enormous power into creating and maintaining it. Evidence scattered through the game suggests he merged with or was consumed by his attempts to solve the Infection, but his exact end remains ambiguous by design.
