Unlearn Soulsborne Habits

If you're coming from Dark Souls or Bloodborne, forget rolling. Sekiro is built around the deflect โ€” pressing block at the exact moment of impact. A perfect deflect deals Posture damage to the enemy, staggers them, and takes zero damage. Rolling away just resets the fight without building toward a kill.

Posture Is the Kill Condition

Every enemy and boss has a Posture bar. Fill it and they're stunned for a Deathblow. Posture damage comes from two sources: deflecting their attacks, and landing your own hits when their Vitality (health) is low. Fighting defensively and deflecting everything is often faster than trying to chip down HP.

Posture Regenerates When Health Is High

If you deflect attacks but don't damage health, the enemy's Posture regenerates quickly. You need to threaten both bars simultaneously โ€” use Posture to stagger, then get hits in to slow their recovery.

Perilous Attack Symbols

A red kanji symbol means a Perilous Attack is coming โ€” one that cannot be deflected. There are three types:

  • Thrust (็บขใ„็ญ‹): Counter with Mikiri Step (dodge INTO the attack)
  • Sweep (่ตคใ„): Jump over it
  • Grab: Dodge to the side

Mikiri Counter is unlocked early in the Skill tree and is non-optional โ€” get it immediately. It deals enormous Posture damage and turns a near-death moment into a huge advantage.

The Combat Arts and Prosthetic Tools

Combat Arts augment your basic moveset. Chasing Slice and Ichimonji: Double are workhorses for Posture damage. Prosthetic Tools (Shuriken, Firecrackers, Spear) can interrupt specific boss behaviors โ€” Firecrackers pause horse-mounted bosses, Spear yanks body parts for bonus damage.
