Sea of Stars: Combat System Explained — Timed Hits and Locks
Master the timed hit system, Break mechanic, and combo attacks to clear encounters efficiently.
Timed Hits Are Not Optional
Pressing the attack button just as your attack lands deals bonus damage and restores a small amount of the Live Mana gauge. Pressing a direction just before an enemy attack lands reduces incoming damage. These are not tutorial hints — they are fundamental to high-level play. Every combat encounter becomes significantly easier once both inputs are automatic.
The Lock System
Enemies with coloured lock icons above their health bar will use a powerful attack once their countdown reaches zero — unless you break their locks first. Breaking a lock requires hitting the enemy with attacks of the matching type (shown as icons: sword, moon, sun, etc.) within the countdown window. Prioritise breaking dangerous locks over pure damage.
Live Mana and Combo Points
Timed attacks fill the Live Mana gauge. Spending Live Mana on Skills powers them up to stronger versions (shown as glowing enhanced skills). Meanwhile, attacking builds Combo Points (the bar below the health bar). Combo Points fund the most powerful party-wide Combo Attacks. Never let Combo Points waste — use the Combo Attack before the bar overflows.
Party Composition for Bosses
Bosses have specific lock types. Before major fights, check which characters hit which damage types: Zale deals Sun damage, Valere deals Moon damage, Serai hits Eclipse, and Garl provides Blunt + excellent healing support. Tailor your active party to cover the boss's lock colours.
Relics for Custom Difficulty
The game includes optional Relics that modify difficulty: Amulet of Storytelling (auto-win battles) for those who want pure story, or challenge-increasing Relics for veterans. Find these in Rainbow Conches trades and use them freely — Sea of Stars is designed to be enjoyed at your pace.
