The Difficulty Curve

Risk of Rain 2's difficulty scales with time elapsed โ€” the longer you play, the harder it gets. There are four settings: Drizzle (story), Rainstorm (standard), Monsoon (hard), and Eclipse (extreme). On Rainstorm, the game becomes challenging around 25โ€“35 minutes. The goal is to collect enough items that your damage and survivability outpace the scaling.

Looping vs. Ending a Run

After Stage 5 (Sky Meadow), you can enter a hidden portal to loop back to Stage 1 at higher difficulty โ€” or take the direct path to the final stage and end the run. Looping gives more items and a higher score but is only viable if your build is strong enough to survive the increased enemy stats. If you're struggling at Stage 4, go straight to the end. If you're godlike, loop.

Items: Tier Priority

  • White (common): Tougher Times, Soldier's Syringe, Paul's Goat Hoof, Lens-Maker's Glasses
  • Green (uncommon): Ukulele, Hopoo Feather, Will-o'-the-wisp, Predatory Instincts
  • Red (legendary): Alien Head, Happiest Mask, Dio's Best Friend โ€” all are strong

The Most Powerful Item: Tougher Times

Tougher Times gives a 15% chance to block any hit completely. Each stack adds 15% to the base formula โ€” stacking to 10 makes you nearly immune to hits. It's the single highest-priority white item in the game. Take every one you see.

Proc Chains (Advanced)

Many items "proc" (trigger randomly on hit). Items that proc can trigger other procs โ€” Ukulele โ†’ Gasoline โ†’ Will-o'-the-wisp chains. Building around proc chance and proc items (primarily with Engineer turrets or Huntress's rain of arrows) can delete entire rooms instantly at high item counts.
