1. Parrying Is Essential, Not Optional

The Shield's parry window (or the Parry Shield) staggers enemies and deals damage. Mastering parry timing dramatically reduces the damage you take from most enemies. Practice it early โ€” it works on almost every standard attack.

2. Build Around One Stat Color

Weapons scale with Brutality (red), Tactics (purple), or Survival (green). Pick one color per run and stack scrolls of that color to maximize damage. Split-scaling builds feel inconsistent until very late game when you have many scrolls available.

3. Never Skip the Weapons Forge

The Forge upgrades your weapons' base damage between biomes. It costs cells โ€” the in-run currency โ€” and the investment pays off enormously. Prioritize forging your primary weapon at every opportunity.

4. Kill Elite Enemies for Blueprints

Glowing orange enemies are Elites. They hit hard but drop blueprints for new weapons and abilities. Blueprints unlock items for future runs at the Collector. Always chase Elites โ€” they're worth the risk.

5. The Boss Stem Cell System

Each Boss Cell you carry increases enemy health and damage but improves loot quality. Don't equip more Boss Cells than you can handle โ€” the difficulty spike is steep.

6. Amulets Are Run-Defining

Amulets (found in Cursed Chests and from some enemies) provide powerful passive effects. The Predator amulet (heal on kill combo) and Soldier's Resistance (flat damage reduction) are strong early picks.

7. Doors Close โ€” Rush the Timed Areas

Several areas have timed doors โ€” yellow markers count down. Move quickly through these zones to access optional rooms with better loot. If the door closes, you can still continue, you just miss the bonus.

8. Use Your Abilities on Cooldown

Dead Cells abilities (grenades, turrets, vines) have cooldowns and deal significant damage. Many players ignore them. Using abilities every 10โ€“15 seconds adds up to a massive amount of damage over a run.

9. The Graveyard Is the Best Secret Zone

The Graveyard biome (requires a specific rune) contains some of the best loot early on and a secret boss. Seek it out once you have the access rune.

10. Spend All Cells Before Boss Fights

Cells are lost on death. Spend everything at the Forge or Collector before each boss fight โ€” hoarding is never worth it.

11. Legendary Items Are Not Always Best

Legendary (pink) versions of items have a built-in curse โ€” taking any damage removes the legendary quality. Great for careful, experienced players; frustrating for beginners. Don't feel bad taking a gold item instead.

12. Respect the Run, Don't Force It

Dead Cells rewards synergy. A mediocre weapon that synergizes with your scrolls will always outperform a great weapon that doesn't. If a run isn't coming together after the first biome, adjust your strategy around what you've found rather than hoping better items appear.
